A Trip to the Trop

Tampa Bay Rays centerfielder BJ Upton, who earlier in the day apologized for his lackadaisical base running during Monday’s victory, was once again in the middle of controversy.  This time, what happened was out of his control.

Upton hit a grounder to Angels first baseman Mark Teixeira.  Teixeira made an errant throw to pitcher Ervin Santana, who was covering first, and Upton was ruled safe by umpire Jerry Meals.  After running through the bag, Upton took a step to the right, and another to the left, but didn’t cross the base line.  Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick, who recovered the ball after it got past Santana, tagged Upton, who put his hand on his head as he was called out.

Maddon emerged immediately from the dugout and got into a heated discussion with Meals and crew chief Gary Darling, resulting in his ejection (the fifth time in his career Maddon has been ejected versus the Angels, his former team).
