Mesquite Horn Making First Playoff Trip

Mesquite Horn High School is getting ready for its first appearance in the high school playoffs.

“We had two goals coming into the year and that was beat Mesquite high school and make the playoffs,” said Horn coach Rodney Webb, “and we did it both in one game, so that was nice.”

Of course, the school is relatively new, having opened in 2000 with 9th and 10th graders, but when Webb took over as the head coach this season, the attitude changed.

“There is a perception here that we are kind of the new kid on the block, little brother mentally, so the expectation throughout Mesquite in the past has been that Horn is the program that really doesn’t have much of a chance to win,” Webb said.

“Unbelievable,” said safety Terrence Brady. “I’ve never been so happy that you’re crying for happiness, tears of joy. That happened Friday.”

There have been a lot of changes since Webb took over as head coach, some subtle, some not, but the biggest change is the one you can’t see and that’s a change in attitude and making these players believe they could win.

“We all had to buy in,” said receiver Tayler Gabriel. “Like all the players are saying, because it’s like a big phrase around here, buy in, buy in. So we bought in, we came to all our games like we were going to win and even if we lost, we still had a winning attitude.”

“A wise man once told me, ‘kids don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care,’ and that’s sort of our attitude as a coaching staff,” Webb said.
