Calgary climber begins trip home after reaching Everest summit
A Calgary mountain climber who reached the peak of Mount Everest last week started his journey home from Nepal on Friday.
Andrew Brash, a high school teacher, successfully summited on May 23 in his second attempt to reach the top of the world’s highest mountain.
In 2006, he was 200 metres from the peak when he cut his trip short to rescue Australian climber Lincoln Hall, who had been left for dead while suffering from altitude sickness.
Brash, who flew out of Kathmandu on Friday, said he couldn’t forget that rescue during his recent expedition.
“And it sort of did something to my stomach, when I looked over. It’s quite steep and wild looking too. I thought about it the whole way up, actually, when I wasn’t concentrating on not tripping, or something.”
He said he also thought about the people who have died in their attempts to climb the mountain and “what an intense experience it was.”
Brash said he has not planned any further climbs at this point and looks forward to spending time with his family when he returns home to Calgary on Sunday.
