Why Spa Treatments Spark So Much Outrage

The idea that execs were getting massages on the taxpayer’s dime was just too much to bear and lawmakers on Capitol Hill let them have it. Even the White House spokesman called the event “despicable.” AIG countered thatit was a business event for independent life insurance agents not corporate execs and it was planned months ago.

From working in upscale resort spas I can tell you that these kinds of company events that include spa treatments, rounds of golf and dinners, are quite common, especially when they’re perks for top salespeople, board members or in this case, customers, which is what the AIG life insurance agents are. And it’s also true that they are planned far in advance and involve contracts.

I think it’s interesting that it was spa treatments not golf or dinners or lavish rooms themselves that got highlighted in most reports. That says to me that most people still consider spa treatments a luxury rather than a way to maintain your health and well-being.
