UN Chief Asks Russia to Contribute More
MOSCOW - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Moscow on Thursday to increase its contributions to the U.N. and its peacekeeping operations, suggesting Russia’s growing economy and global clout have put it in a position to give more.Ban’s exhortation came after meetings with Russian leaders who stressed, in repeated comments meant as criticism of the United States and its NATO allies, that Moscow sees the U.N. as the irreplaceable linchpin of the international security system.”Russia is one of the largest contributors in terms of financial contributions and also peacekeeping operations. But with increased development in the economy, as well as a political high profile, I hope that Russia can do more,” Ban said.”This is what I have expressed … to the Russian leadership,” Ban told a news conference following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his first trip to Russia as the U.N. chief.
