MADISON, Wis. - Some of Wisconsin’s worst sex offenders
living in a state-run treatment facility wrongly received college
financial aid last year, its director said Monday.
At least one offender living in Sand Ridge Secure Treatment
Center was scamming the system by receiving aid and pocketing the
money after dropping classes, director Steve Watters said. A
handful of others took classes and claimed money for living
expenses even though taxpayers already pay for them, he said.
“One patient was clearly engaged in the activity entirely for
the purpose of getting money,” Watters said. “The other patients
were netting a windfall for living expenses they should not have
been getting.”
