Longer trip looks ideal for Doctor Fremantle

Sir Michael Stoute often runs his classic prospects at Chester and Doctor Fremantle rates a good bet to provide him with a second win in three years in the Bank of America Chester Vase (2.45) there today.

A five-length winner of a maiden at Nottingham last autumn, Doctor Fremantle was heavily backed to make a winning reappearance in a handicap at Newmarket three weeks ago. He failed by a neck to overhaul Bronze Cannon, but the pair pulled five lengths clear and the form is already working out well.

Bred to come into his own now that he steps up in trip, Doctor Fremantle may prove too strong for Trip Pampas Cat, an easy winner of a hot maiden on his debut at Newmarket, and Feared In Flight, who had his limitations exposed when a one-paced third to Centennial at Sandown Park.

Maraahel bids for a remarkable four-timer in the Grant Thornton Huxley Stakes (2.15), but this is the first time that he has come here without the benefit of a prep run and Multidimensional is preferred. The latter was restricted to just two starts last season after fracturing his pelvis and shaped as though in need of the run when fourth to stablemate Phoenix Tower at Newmarket last month. He can continue Henry Cecil’s bright start to the season.

The Halifax Handicap (3.15) looks competitive, but the well-drawn Royalist should not be far away. Despite racing too keenly early on, he sprinted clear of his rivals in a maiden at Doncaster on his return to action and Trip promises to be far more effective in a more strongly run race.
