Local Band Members Ready For Orlando Trip
While people in Denison are slogging through the snow, slush, ice and cold to freezing temperatures next week, 40 members of the Denison-Schleswig Monarch Band will be soaking up the rays and enjoying temperatures in the 70s and 80s in Orlando, Florida, while marching in the Orlando Citrus Parade on Tuesday, December 30, as members of the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band.
While not rehearsing or marching in the parade, the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band, more than 200 strong, will enjoy side trips to Universal Studios Orlando Resort and Theme Park, Seaworld Adventure Park, Medieval Times dinner and tournament, and will attend the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day to watch Michigan State and Georgia battle on the gridiron.
Adults traveling with the Denison-Schleswig Monarch Band members will be Tom Klaver, Denison High School band instructor; Patti Bekkerus, Denison Middle School band instructor; and Steve and Nancy Westerberg. Klaver and Bekkerus are section leaders for the band. Steve Westerberg, Denison High School principal, and his wife, Nancy, have chaperoned the honor marching band for the past five or six trips. A number of parents of honor band members will also be making the trip on their own.
