Float trip ends in drowning of Illinois man in Meramec
A float trip over the weekend ended with the drowning of a 21-year-old man from Greenfield. His body was recovered Sunday afternoon.
He and a group of friends started their float trip at Meramec State Park about six miles upstream from where he drowned. Authorities say people don’t realize how tired you can get just being in the sun.
“You’re floating a long way in the heat, the sun is beating down on you, it’ll fatigue you and a lot of tubers will get out and swim,” Missouri State Water Patrol Lt. Jeff Bair said. “This again was towards the end of the float.”
Friends say the victim was a good swimmer. Bair says the victim was drinking but didn’t know if he was intoxicated.
