37 LI WWII vets get free trip to Washington
Thirty-seven World War II veterans from across Nassau and Suffolk were to leave from Long Island MacArthur Airport on Saturday morning for a very special trip - to join several hundred other veterans at the federal memorial built in their honor.
It was to be the first of a series of monthly Honor Flights, in which the veterans are flown free and given escorts to help them get around Washington.
Huneken was in high school in 1942 when he joined the Coast Guard. His service mostly consisted of port security work in the New York area until 1944, when surgery for a spinal cyst meant he was considered unfit for duty, forcing his discharge “for the good of the service.”
