Balanced Rangers win easily at Herrin

Fresh off a third consecutive win at the Anna Invitational over the weekend, the Benton Rangers golf team shot a 146 as a team, led by Bryce Doughty’s 2-under 34 to knock off Pinckneyville and host Herrin Monday afternoon.

Benton won by 15 shots over the Panthers (161) and by 58 strokes over the host Tigers (204) to improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Rangers had four scores in the 30s, led by Doughty. Thomas Simpson shot 36, Andrew Mitchell 37, and Josh Harp 39.

“We had good balanced scoring,” said Benton coach Scott Simpson. “When you don’t count a 40 and a 41, that’s pretty good.”

Doughty’s round included four birdies and two bogeys, while Simpson had nine pars.

“Bryce shot well with those four birdies and Thomas said he has never had nine pars before,” Simpson said. “And Mitchell got off to a slow start, but he kept the round together and held in there. A 37 was a good score for him. he probably isn’t happy with it, but it was a good score.”
Harp’s 39 put him in the scoring for the second straight match.

“That is good to see,” Simpson said. “He has the least match experience on the team and he is playing real well. He is going to be there and shoot some good scores for us.”

Shane Dyel shot 40 and Zach Tate 41 to just miss out of the scoring.

“We’ve got six guys all right there,” Simpson said. “That’s good competition, all six want to figure in the scoring. They are playing hard and that’s a good deal.”

Benton will host Waterloo Gibault at Rend Lake Golf Course on Wednesday.

“That will be a good one,” said Simpson. “I believe they will be one of the top 2 or 3 teams coming through the West Frankfort sectional. So we will see where we stand.”

Score sheet mixup:  Due to a score sheet mixup, two scores were missing from Benton’s team score at the Anna Invite. Josh Harp and Zach Tate were tied for the fourth score, both shooting 83.
